Entrance Scholarships

Simon Fraser University offers entrance scholarships to the best incoming graduate students for full-time graduate study or research. Some of these awards are by departmental nomination and some are competitive. All awards are contingent upon availability of funds.

All application forms can be found on the Forms and Resources page. Details and the process for each entrance award are described below.

Major Entrance Scholarships (by Departmental Nomination)

Departments nominate the strongest candidates and forward the completed "Departmental Nomination" form with a copy of the applicant's admission file to the Dean of Graduate Studies by February 15th. The Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee will decide the most appropriate award (if any) for each applicant. Awards are made, after a University-wide adjudication, in early March for tenure in the following academic year.

Provost Graduate Awards
Top-up awards for national scholarship recipients from one of the tri-councils: NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR.

  • Provost's Prize of Distinction (PPD)
The PPD will be awarded automatically to run concurrently with the student's national scholarship. The value of the PPD is equivalent to the cost of tuition per term. For further details, view the official Terms of Reference.
  • Provost International Fellowship
Awards for exceptional students sponsored by their country of origin, equivalent to the student's tuition fees per academic term. For further details, view the official Terms of Reference.

Special Graduate Entrance Scholarships (SGES)
The Special Graduate Entrance Scholarship (SGES) is a one-year award normally valued at between $2,000 and $9,000. It is intended primarily as a means of recruiting outstanding applicants for admission who are considering other institutions.

The student must be nominated for the SGES by the Graduate Program Chair of the academic unit to which the student will be admitted. Nomination is by memo from the Graduate Program Chair to the Dean of Graduate Studies and should include the following:

  • evidence that the student is outstanding. A full copy of the student's application for admission and all accompanying documentation (transcripts, letters of recommendation) should be included.
  • a description of the financial support to be guaranteed which may include guarantees of GF, TA and/or RA support. Major scholarships such as SSHRC or NSERC may also be included.
  • evidence that other schools are actively “competing’ for this student. In other words, the candidate has one or more documented competing offers of support from other Universities. This criterion is not required for students who hold a major external award such as NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR.
  • The departmental ‘targeted’ SGES allocation has already been awarded.

To be eligible to hold the SGES, you must be registered as a full-time regular (not "on-leave" or "part-time") student at Simon Fraser University. Nominations will be accepted at any time up to April 30, or until such time as the SGES budget is fully committed.

Private Entrance Scholarships
Interested applicants should read the Terms of Reference, found by clicking on the award name, for each award to ensure they are eligible. Eligible applicants then complete the Application for a Private Graduate Scholarship form and submit it to their intended department of enrollment. Departments are to recommend and rank a maximum of two applicants for each award.
