The Department of French offers a number of interesting programs for undergraduate students. Programs of study include the honors, major and extended minor in French, interdisciplinary joint majors, a post-baccalaureate diploma in French and Education, and a certificate in French language proficiency.
The courses we offer range from introductory to advanced levels and enable students in advanced levels to specialize in areas such as language, literature, and linguistics.
Before enrolling for the first time in a French course at SFU, most students are required to take a Placement Test.
Italian courses are also offered through the Department of French.
For students seeking an exciting, culturally immersive experience, the department holds a two month field school in Tours, France, where students in their third or fourth year of study can take three intensive, third year courses.
At the graduate level, we offer an M.A. program with a concentration in either French literature or French linguistics as well as a Joint M.A. in English and French literatures.
A new French language laboratory enhances language acquisition and provides students and faculty with course materials and resources. The French Student Union is active and organizes activities such as French films, outings in the French community and fêtes.
Our offices are located on the 2000 level of West Mall Complex; faculty and staff are both accessible and friendly. You will find details of our programs and courses on this website, but if you have more questions, do not hesitate to contact us at frenadv@sfu.ca
