Copyright

When you make a copy for presentation or distribution, you are responsible for clearing copyright for those items. The resources on this page will give you a head start on finding and obtaining copyright permissions..

Assistance at SFU

• Document Solutions is responsible for copying and clearing materical for custom courseware
• The Library places books and other materials on reserve (so you don't have to make copies) and has information on finding and using images.
• CODE (Centre for Online and Distance Education) clears items for its distance education courses and hosts some guidelines and information.
• Copying material going from print-to-print for instructional and administrative uses under the terms and conditions of SFU's licensing agreement with Access Copyright: http://www.sfu.ca/archives/CopyrightProgram.html
• The TLC (Teaching and Learning Centre) can provide advice on clearing items for digital distribution.

Policies and Laws

• Intellectual Property Policy SFU's policy regarding the creation of copyright materials. 
• Canada's Copyright Act which includes its exceptions, such as fair dealing and the exemptions for educational institutions.

• Print-to-print for instructional and administrative uses under the terms and conditions of SFU's licensing agreement with Access Copyright: 
• Digital and web based material (articles, images, video and audio)
• Multimedia in the classroom: The SFU library has films, documentaries and slides that you can show in the classroom.
• Images in the classroom: The SFU library has information on finding images for your presentation - go beyond Google!

• Creative Commons has print, audio, video and media available for educational use. Search for items here: http://search.creativecommons.org/   
• Flickr is a photo sharing site, in which amateur photographers share and comment on photos. Using the advanced search function: http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/, you can choose to search only in Creative Commons licensed content. Flickr explains the different licenses available here: http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
• Wikimedia Commons hosts media that you can contribute to or use: http://commons.wikimedia.org  The media here is organized by topic and includes photos, illustrations and more. Consult the license agreement below each media item.
• The CBC Archives has radio and video files to which you can link.
• The Morgue Files http://www.morguefile.com/ has digital stock photography for use.
  
•  Images Canada: http://www.imagescanada.ca is a central search engine with collections from archives, libraries, museums and universities across Canada. Users have permission to use images for non-commercial purposes (details here: http://www.imagescanada.ca/r1-230-e.html)
