Turnitin is the online service used by SFU to check the originality of student papers. Because data submitted to Turnitin is stored and accessed on U.S. servers, the university has updated its protocols for using the product to ensure that all practices continue to comply with B.C.’s Protection of Privacy legislation. The changes took effect at the beginning of January 2012. The Teaching and Learning Centre website has a dedicated page that provides detailed explanations of the service and the responsibilities of instructors and students. The page includes videos and screen captures with step-by-step instructions for performing key functions. Anyone with additional questions is invited to contact Lynda Williams, TLC learning technology analyst.
