Project Description
The Social Justice Education Project is a community-based educational initiative led by Simon Fraser University and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. aimed at raising awareness of social justice issues among youth and the community at large. This initiative is funded by the Government of Canada's Community Historical Recognition Program and will produce a new-media website and a one hour documentary. Both the website and documentary will foster critical thinking around social justice issues with a focus on the stories of Chinese Canadians.
Although this project primarily focuses on the social injustices experienced by Chinese Canadians historically, it also provides an opportunity for all communities to critically encounter Canada's complex history of exclusionary measures and contribute to a shared future of human rights and human dignity. These exclusionary measures include the Chinese Immigration Act, the War Measures Act and internment camps during World War I and II, as well as the Komagata Maru incident.
The intent of this project is to engage as well as inform, to create public dialogue about this diverse history of discrimination and its adverse effects that continue to resonate within communities today. However this project will also highlight the tremendous contributions that members of the Chinese Canadian community have made to this country's rich and diverse heritage.
